When your batteries are past their useful life, NDSI will make sure they are recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. We work closely with several national battery recycling programs, which can convert more than 97% of used batteries into usable materials. Lead, plastic, and acid are all recycled and can be re-used.

According to the Battery Council International, this makes lead-acid batteries “the environmental success story of our time.” The foundation for this success is the fact that new lead-acid batteries are manufactured with 60-80% recycled materials. This creates for these products a closed-loop, perpetual lifecycle.

At NDSI, we process batteries in lots of 40,000 pounds. We contact our recycling partners, who oversee the destruction of old batteries and the rebirth of usable materials.
  • Batteries are crushed and separated into their various materials
  • Polypropylene plastic pieces are scooped away, washed, and sent to plastic recyclers. The plastic pieces are melted together and extruded into small pellets that can be resold to battery manufacturers
  • Lead grids, lead oxide, and other lead parts are cleaned, melted, and poured into molds to create ingots. These ingots are resold to battery manufacturers
  • Sulfuric acid can be neutralized with an industrial compound similar to baking soda to create water. The water is treated, cleaned, and tested before releasing it safely into public sewer systems. Or, sulfuric acid can be converted to sodium sulfate, an odorless white powder that is used in laundry detergent, glass, and textiles
